I have a business that is parallel to the tool business and does not conflict with the tool business, route owners/independents could make some good additional income with it, I am going national with my business and after reading your forum I know this would help franchise owners and independents make some money. I need to get a national list of tool truck owners for any of the national companies and or independents, can anyone help? expax@yahoo.com

Answers 251

  1. Almost no company or association will turn over their client or member list to you. Would you turn your customer list to possibly your competition? of coarse, not! Your best bet is to put an advertisement in the trade magazine that covers your target market. But it will not be cheap!!

Looking for a way to increase profits without more outlay of cash?  Go to www.raprofits.com Awesome company. I made an additional $1200 my first week with their program.

Answers 249

  1. Great software, heard from customers the Mac dealer was using it to hold his own contracts $500.00 and above purchases. Bought him lunch one day and we are now both running every account through the R/A Profit$ system. Easy to use, spent a rainy Sat. morning inputting the info, so its worth the time and money. It's also helping with turn rate I figure I'll tern my money 20 maybe 30 more days this years?? so $40-$60K?? To soon to tell but on track for a $26,500.00 Profit increase. Plus volume discounts. Run your numbers 1/2 your book balance times 1.5% a month plus profit from 30 days collection (because it does increase your cash flow) that's how I did it and it's pretty close.

Question 247
Are there any "flag" (franchise) dealers out there who are afraid to quit because they don't know what they are going to do if they quit?

Answers 247

  1. Go Indy
  2. Go to www.imtda.com Independent Mobile Tool Distributors Association will help you to go Independent from being a Flag.
  3. I recently QUIT MATCO! This was not because of not being afraid of what I was going to do after quitting but was horribly fearful of loosing EVERYTHING and I mean LOOSING everything IF I were to stay with this expensive loosing venture. Pay attention to your own gut feeling, common sense, and hire a good accountant to tell you your real profits - not the franchises reports which require that you keep giving MORE & MORE of your own personal money to people as a personal loan with no interest. Logic and honest numbers dictated I didn't have any choice but to shut down ASAP! Plan your work (shut-down) and work your plan smart. 3 to 4 months before terminating begin your plan and don't look back until it's all over. RUN.

Question 246

Above, enter your answer to the following Question #246

Question 246
How many of you mobile tool jobbers out there are fed up with major WD warehouse selling to almost anybody (on-line stores, parts stores, even the end user)? In my opinion, they lower our profit margin, lower product image to the end user, lower the product's value (nobody to back up their warranty) etc. This price war will end up with everyone losers. Manufacturers will have their products competing with import copycats at the low side of the market. The end user-mechanics end up with "crappie" tools with no warranty. And, of coarse, us tool jobbers not being able to make a decent profit ending up quitting the businesses. We, jobbers, provide a necessary link in the distribution chain and to skip us will lead to disaster. Any opinions to this situation??

Answers 246

  1. I think that the worse offender is Weis Tools that sends the same catalog under the name: The Tool Warehouse to every one in the trade. I try to minimize selling generic tools and feature my nitch exclusive items. In a pinch I will match plus 20% to a buyer that will pay immediately... You can get an idea on how I work from my website: WWW.thetoolnetwork.com
  2. Times are changing and we are going to have too change with them, take it from a true optimist. I started asking my customers when they paid by credit card if they paid it off every month, about 80% were NOT paying off their credit cards so that opened up a selling opportunity for me. If they bought from the WD's they were paying interest on their purchase increasing their cost. Now is where the true optimist came out, what if I started charging service fees? Been hearing about R/A Profits for 4-6 months, so I bought there software. In full discloser it took me about 2-3 days to get the hang of using it, but after 6-7 weeks now I've increased my DAILY profit by $93.72, keep in mind that's a day almost $500.00 more a week and I expect it to go up, I believe I can make an additional $30K this year in profit without increasing my risk. My purchase and delivered average has gone up as well. Guys I truly think its time to change the way we do business! Our customers and us are paying service fees on everything in today's market look at any of your utility bills or your cell phone bill. I bring this up only because if I have to discount I can make it back in service fees. Think about it and call them 775-236-5720 it makes sense! Tell them CJ sent ya.
  3. We are there bread & butter Check out IMTDA@yahoogoups.com. I think you will like it.
  4. I am with Independent Tools Incorporated. We are attempting to "reinvent" the way a tool business operates. We soon be offering "Made in USA" products. Also, we will maintain a "captive" market and only sell to mobile dealers. We would not be classified as a WD since we are hoping to produce most of the products that we sell. We are more or less another pro tool truck choice with a 50% margin on hard-lines. Example pricing includes the following... 1/4 10mm shallow msrp $3.25 your cost $1.46... 3/8 10mm msrp 4.25 your cost $1.91...

Question 242
How many of you "flags" out there aren't making the kind of money you thought you would?

Answers 242

  1. Considering $4.00/gallon diesel @ 7 MPG, insurance, truck maintenance costs and replacing (buying) all the Matco warranted broken tools regularly tying up any extra cash, there is ZERO money left to live on! This hard truth in numbers shows this business is loosing A LOT more money than making any profit! I'm in the middle of dumping this expensive franchise ASAP and would NEVER do it again.
  2. none of us with the price of product and fuel. There is no "flag" making what they should be making and if you do, they will stop you some how\
  3. Starting to, I started using R/A Profit$ software mainly to track my Past Due accounts, but knows I use it on every transaction. Tracks late fees, Hold my own contracts collecting the interest myself. Has added to my bottom line. Worth every penny!
  4. Best advice-go INDEPENDENT!!! Better profit margin, higher RA collections, more customers almost guarantees you more$$$$.Or stay with the "flag" and go broke!!!

What is the current HONEST (non-biased) percentage of new dealer start-ups that fail for each franchise (lets be honest with everyone): Snap-on, Matco, Mac, & Cornwell? This answer NEEDS to be known ASAP before I sign on ANY dotted line!

Answers 240

  1. I was a strong snap on dealer going to cornwell was the best option if you like to call 913-226-5305
  2. 80-90% Cannot last more than 3-5 yrs with mac tools they start 3-400 new starts every year out of 1400-1500 dealers do the math dont be dreamer have an Business lawyer look at the contract been their and done that Please dont be a dreamer. just be a hard worker
  3. 85% Pal
  4. DO NOT SIGN THAT INFO SHOULD IN THE COMPANY YOU ARE LOOKING AGREEMENT THAT THEY MUST LET YOU REVIEW BEFORE YOU SIGN IT
  5. Don't sign with MAC
  6. Even the flag carriers are not aware of the true numbers, these corporations won't tell anyone because they don't want the truth to be known and posted on internet websites like this one for potential dealers to find out. So at the best all anyone can do is guess from what they hear. My opinion is that number is so huge it's off the charts, I bet it's over 85% I was in training less than three years ago with about 20 other new dealers at one of these flags. Their is only one left, half were gone in the first year. It may be even higher, who knows, but the only successful dealers are ones that have been around for a long time, not anyone starting up.
  7. run!!!!!!!!! they all will tear out your eyes
  8. Independent is the way to go!  Check with ISN regarding their Freedom Program for Independent mobile dealers. Ask for Paul Hallstrom or Terry Perkins, 800-966-8478.
  9. 50% fail within 2 years, 75% within 5 years
  10. Over 1000 people / families per YEAR are devastated. If this is a wrong number then these corporations need to post each one's numbers. What is there to hide in the truth?
  11. .
  12. I'M UNDER ONE OF THE FLAGS AND IM RUNNING IN THE TOP 40% AND ITS HAND TO MOUTH

I own 05' freightliner mt45 Mercedes engine, has anyone experienced repeated drive belt failures with this vehicle?

Answers 237

  1. If you have the early model Mercedes 5 cylinder engine, they had trouble with crankshaft and balancer problems. At the Dodge dealership, the mechanics said they had comebacks even after being repaired for the same problem. Mercedes used a different motor after that. Good Luck.
  2. .
  3. Harmonic balance is probably bad. You will have to make them replace it again and again until they get it right, but it will fix it, hang in there.
  4. I have a 03 mt45 with mercedes 4 cyl engine & about once a year I have to replace the belt tensioner & the belt.Freightliner told me that they have an updated tensioner, but still have the same problems every year. I keep an extra tensioner on the truck.
  5. There was a bad load of harmonic balancers at Mercedes. Once they found that out and got a good one on it my truck has run like a dream. Belt life is shorter tat I would like but I don't have the catastrophic failure anymore of the belt slinging off.

Question 235
Looking to leave snap on for cornwell is this good? get 35,000 free tool at net and 4 x route size

Answers 235

  1. Absolutely , Have been with Cornwell for a bit over 4years. Was with Matco for 8 1/2. Best change ever. Tons of customers, tons of freedom, and tons of cash.
  2. NO BETTER OR WORSE THAN WHERE YOU ARE AT NOW, THEY ARE ALL BAD BUSINESSES TO BE IN
  3. Not a good move at all. I find it hard to believe Cornwall is even still in business. Their giving you a huge territory for a reason, because no one else wants it and their reputation is ruined in the premium tool business. End users will not buy from a company that is on it's last leg, and believe me, Cornwall is. All that inventory they promised you, do you get to pick and choose what you get? Or are the going to give you a bunch of crap out of the back of the warehouse that's been sitting there stale for five years?
  4. I looked at Snapon and went with Cornwell been here 3 yrs now and still think it's a good company to be with I am doing well with Cornwell
  5. thank you for your help.
  6. they are offering around 450 people now. is that good ? what should i ask for
  7. I WOULD SUGGEST GOING INDEPENDENT, SO YOU ARE NOT RESTRICTED ON YOUR TERRITORY
  8. No go by the customer count!! They can count the car wash boy as a "potential customer". I have seen this done. Ask other ex-dealers who are familiar with this technique.
  9. I agree 100%, but what can you do about going back to collect your money and selling in your old route?
  10. 35,000 free tools???? who told you that??? don't you mean 9.99%???
  11. Check with MATCO!!
  12. .
  13. All franchise tool companies are pretty much the same. Customer count and different decals & uniform are different. Basically they are the "same" operating procedure.

Question 234
Has anyone else ran across GM's tool catalog at GM dealerships yet? It has tools sold at jobber prices to the mechanic. Who is supplying these catalog??? Any ideas?

Answers 234

  1. This has ISN written all over it! Why someone would buy their tools from a company that competes directly against them just like this is beyond me!
  2. Its Medco. GM makes the catalogs and Medco sells the tools, just like they do with tech schools. Wake up pal! We all compete for the techs business with everyone that buys and sells tools like the internet, auto stores, Lowes, Home depot and all. You need to think about how to get your share on the value you give to your customers and worry less about what other choices your customers have. If you think that anyone is going to protect you then you are in the wrong business.

Question 233

Above, enter your answer to the following Question #233

Question 233
Anyone been a Matco or other Franchiser afraid to go Independent due to the clause in the franchise agreement that states you aren't supposed to go into the same territory selling any "similar product within 1-year after terminating the franchise agreement"? Anyone ever heard of someone getting in trouble for trying to sell independently in the same territory they were previously a franchiser in?

Answers 233

  1. Why do folks appear so afraid of these corporate people? These franchise companies won't even help their CURRENT distributors make an honest living after their goon squad taps your bank account to zero, so how are these goons going to police an HONEST business person making a living? Follow him around? I guarantee they don't go around in person and replace broken tools which were sold in these shops! They like to keep contract signing people fearful because this is all they have left in ethical credibility and it makes them feel all powerful in peanut brain thinking. This could be serious legal stuff - however, if the franchises would just tell the TRUTH to the public on the REAL success rates of it's distributorships, nobody would want anything to do with them to begin with.
  2. They "police" these franchise agreements through competitors input. In other words, they don't follow you around on your route to see what shops you are servicing. They just call the snap on guys on the phone and ask him if you are still in the shops, then they pay him cash money to pick up one of your receipts with a date on it from one of your customers. The customers don't know better, give him a copy and you are screwed! The snap on guy can eliminate his competition this way, and theirs no paper trail to trace it back to him. Plus he makes money off the cash deals with matco. That's an awfully big risk someone is taking by trying to stay in the same shops as on their list of calls. It is much easier and a lot less expensive to go across town and start fresh, then in a year go back to your old territory and pick up the good customers you had before. One thing matco cannot do under any circumstance is keep you out of those shops on your list of calls to collect your TP. You are allowed to go back in and collect, but you can't sell. So if you have the resources to do this, here is how to get around that. Just before you leave matco, load up one guy in the really good shops that you can trust, run his account through the roof, than take an entire year to collect it. You are still in the shop that way, showing your face, seeing "your guys". Then when the year is up, you have never missed a beat, just start selling to everyone in the shop again.
  3. has any one been stopped? If the franchiser terminated the contracted has anyone Been stopped?
  4. Okay, this is all good info. But no one is really answering the question! Have you heard or know of anyone that has gotten into trouble? I would like to know, I will be an X Mac man in three weeks or less. I've been told that I can't even go back to collect. So what do I do?????
  5. do not listen to any of those corporate Goons That came from Frito lays potato chips! They have their #s to try to meet and they are not doing it they are just trying to sell new routes> Go in their and get your money a let them worry about you!
  6. I was a MIC dist. for ten years, until Aug of last year. I have been doing the Indy thing since, in the same route. I would suggest you take your contract to a lawyer to see what they can do. I would at least make them make me leave my route. Gene STICK0001@AOL.COM
  7. For those of you who are presently "flags" but thinking of going independent-go to the ISN SHOW in Florida. There will be a lot of exflags there who made the change and can give "honest" answers to your questions.
  8. I was a Matco dist. in ND, which is a right to work state. Went independent '06. Matco had a no compete clause in my contract, but they also had a addendum form for the state of ND that says that the securities commissioner has determined the following agreement provisions are unfair, unjust or inequitable to ND franchises (Restrictive Covenants) Check your contract, go indy if you can, double your margin and still sell for less than the flags.
  9. When you are at the show look for IMTDA members they can help

Question 228
Any body else in the mobile tool business feeling the economy fall apart?

Answers 228

  1. These days one must think of the global economy which is being affected by rising fuel prices, falling dollar. An adjustment (recession) to the economy is a reality. In other words, every business is feeling the "pinch" in one way or another.
  2. I'm In the trucking business. I pull a flatbed. The economy has been VERY soft for over a year now. Usually I see the up turns and down turns months ahead of time. No sign yet of an up turn. On a positive note I get the vibe most businesses are sitting on a ton of cash waiting it out.
  3. On my MATCO route just in the past two months, I have had THREE customers file chapter #7 bankruptcy -(No Assets)! I am feeling the economy in a spiral downward for sure. Considering this business's future in peril.
  4. This business is ALL attitude. I set my goals for 2007,and blew them away. Sales and collections up 31%. This after 12 years in business. I had just decided this was going to be MY YEAR !!!!
  5. There is about to be a recessions train wreck folks and we are the passengers; I hope some of us can survive. From what I have experienced with my current customers in my demographic area, the recession is already here and it's for sure only going to get worse. If this makes you angry – that’s good because you can do something about it. Stand up and tell these tool franchise companies you aren't going to take their "Greed, gre-e-ed, gre-e-e-e-edy" program crap anymore and mean it. Do it now before it's too late. (A word to the wise)-If you are considering STARTING this type of franchised tool business - DON’T DO IT! You will loose everything and I mean everything! Find out how many distributors have closed up shop just with-in the FIRST year of their expensive venture! You will be in shock!
  6. Buy R/A Profit$ software ( www.raprofits.com ) start holding your own contracts (quit selling contracts to your branded financing) auto charge late and/or service fees increasing your profits and weekly turn rate. It's time the Mobile tool industry started charging fees, ever other business in the world does. Increased my Profit Margin in the first month.  Take control of your business, IT'S YOUR MONEY, TIME AND ENERGY! the bank charges why don't you? Once again QUIT LENDING MONEY (tools) FOR FREE!!!!!!!
  7. The whole industry is falling apart. Manufacturers are giving lifetime warranties on new cars, free inspections, free oil changes, free everything. Well, that translates to no work in the independent shops at all, and warranty work at the dealers where the techs don't make any money to buy tools. The other thing that drives this is that people can't afford to drive as much anymore, they plan their errands better now so as not to waste gas, so less driving means less breakdowns. It all trickles downhill from there, and tool dealers start dropping like flies. Brace yourself, it's going to get a lot worse before it gets better. I recently talked to an industry executive at Stanley Works and they figure this recession may be what finally forces them out of the premium tool business. They are forecasting a loss of 1/3 of their dealer force in the next 24 months.
  8. Go to the ISN EXPO in Orlando on June 27-28, there will door prizes, clinics, etc. Plus, hundreds of fellow dealers to talk to.

Who wants to really be honest, when you add up all of the time you put in this business, how much do you really make?

Answers 227

  1. I'll be HONEST & share P&L on an accrual accounting basis with Matco for 2006: I had a net loss of <$11,197.46> (includes my truck depreciation) and $0.00 salary draw for my 12 hour per day (avg 60 hour week) routine. Not a very wise business investment! Who else wants to share HONEST numbers?
  2. about $28.85 an hour 150k a yr 100 hrs a week
  3. Not enough dude, you know that.
  4. about $28.85 an hour 150k a yr 100 hrs a week
  5. Less than zero, there is no real money with Mac. I can prove it. Why didn't any one tell us this was a hugh mistake
  6. When I started in the franchised mobile tool business, testimonials like these posted here were not available. This kind of web site is a great asset for anyone looking for the honest meat and potatoes about the mobile tool business. Thank You folks at AllSoft for this web site and allowing free speech to expose the facts which hopefully prevents other honest folks from a HUGE, life changing financial mistake. Keep up the great work!
  7. None, this is a very poor business to be in and start. You must do research before starting any business, after checking into this business you will realize that no one with smart business sense would start this type of business. This is not the answer for the burned out technician looking to get out, stay out of this business or lose everything you have and more.
  8. The honest truth is anyone can succeed at this business. There is no route better than the other. If you are not a self motivate go find another answer to what to do with life. After 2 different companies and 13 years and 3 separate routes, I can honestly say that with the correct frame of mind anyone can make it happen. It won't be easy, but then what business is a piece of cake besides being a baker. If it was easy , everyone would do it and I wouldn't have anybody to sell to.
  9. Success seen from one person's brain may not be success to another. I know professional bakers who make MUCH more money than this business could EVER produce in this economy after you consider the astronomical operating costs. The honest truth is that there are many routes that were called "potential" customers by the franchise company and the majority of these potential customers are only standing vertical and breathing with no intention of spending money they don't have. It is a loosing business for anyone just starting out and don't be misled that you can make a honest living at it.
  10. When a new person has to borrow ANY amount of money and pay interest weekly on this money to start-up, he has already LOST his total investment BIG TIME! The franchise companies business plan requires you to LOAN this BORROWED money as tools you must pay cash for from THEM to questionable people with 0% interest (they call thESE 'POTENTIAL CUSTOMERS') with NO WAY to get any serious return on your CASH investment. These franchise companies will NOT give a rip about your money situation once you have signed on their dotted line and when you have exhausted all your GOOD credit line & good faith effort, they will DUMP you and abandon you telling you "the money we had you put on the street is ALL your responsibility" and "any contracts you wrote for US will be charged to your tool account with 22.5% interest-Please read your contract" (over 200 pages) you signed. "You just were not cut out for this business"! THEN "Anything else I can help you with today?" TALK ABOUT ANXIETY & HORROR!
  11. Just some info for anyone wanting to start a mobile tool franchise. Just finished tax return for Matco distributorship in 2007. The P&L on an accrual basis had a net loss of <$20,572.00! Can't afford to stay in this business for another year making (SPENDING) this kind of money? READ #7. This is a very poor business to be in and start because you will loose everything involving finances and it will indeed be VERY hard on your family to recover from! This is honest from experience. Don't do it! Get a real paying job or stay where you are at.
  12. .
  13. I am a MAC Dist. with 1yr and 9mos in. I run my route four days a week. I average 36 - 42 hrs. a week. If I had paid myself in the first year I would have made about $22,000. However I reinvested any money back into the business. This will allow me to pay off my truck and inventory loans faster. After they are paid I will see $3200.00 more a mo. in income. I came into this business expecting to lose money for the first two years. Every book on business I have read and every business person I have talked to says to expect to lose money for the first two years in any business. MAC, Matco, Snap-on ect. will not tell you this. They only require you to have $8,000 - $12,000 in assets to start. The truth is you need $40,000 - $50,000. You have to have time to build trust and customers. You have to have time to sort the good from the bad. You can make good money in this business if you are prepared. The big problem is the flag companies don't do a good job with dist. prep.
  14. Wake up READ #7 and #10 you no longer have to lend MONEY/TOOLS for free www.raprofits.com has a stand alone software to help! Not a fuel charge but a system that only charges fees IF the customer doesn't pay as agreed! It's time the tool dealers quit lending for FREE. Once again if the customer pays as agreed they will never see a fee, or you can start running your business like a Credit Card account, every 30,60,90 etc days a service fee get applied $80K on the street at 1.5% heck that's only $1,200.00 a month in FREE MONEY with no added risk or TOOLS on the street and guess what your customers will start paying on time!!! Isn't that what we all want? If their buying from WD's their using their Credit Cards and not paying them off so guess what? Their paying a FEE! You now have another sales opportunity against the WD's and price objections Example pay me off in 30 days NO FEES if not, FEES are applied just like his Credit Card Call them 775-236-5720 www.raprofits.com If every dealers starts using this system every dealer will increase their PROFIT$ and ROI it's only $495.00 and less than a cup a coffee a day. I'll bet most of your shops are charging some sort of added fee like "shop supplies" etc everyone in the world is charging fees EXCEPT for the mobile tool dealer, WHY? Get started today!!

Are there any at all success stories about honest hardworking folks investing their hard cash in the franchised mobile tool business?

Answers 224

  1. Not no more, Pal.
  2. No
  3. I have been in the tool business as an indy. for 40+ years. I still enjoy going out and making an honest living. I am not rich but I do not lack any of the important things of life. I would do it again but I would do some things different of course, hind sight is real good. An indy. from Maine.
  4. Yes, but mostly from the 1970s and 1980s!
  5. Guy's it time you change the way you do business!!! Quit lending TOOLS/$$$ for free!!! Get started using this R/A Profit$ software they set me up (loaded everything) the first week I generated over $2,000.00 more and received over 20 calls setting up payment plans. Think about it, who lends money for free??? why are we??? Lets get our business back and start living our DREAMS not fulfilling corporate Americas dreams. CEO of Snap-on just walked away with $7.1 MILLION dollars plus other non disclosed benefits. plus he's still on the board. We are the monkey's with the tin cups so let fill them up for us!!!! Call them these guy's/gals are great, they truly want us to succeed! 775-236-5720 ask for Sarah or John
  6. Yes, I've been at for eleven years and can tell you don't do what any of the tool company's say. That will only make them money. Be an Indy Gene
  7. Yes, there are success stories out there but unfortunately there are few and far between. Just ask mechanics how long their franchise dealer has been around. Their answer will most likely be only 2 or 3 years. So unless you believe the previous franchise dealer made so much money so he retired early. Or maybe what the franchiser says "the guy was not suited to be a dealer". Check it out first.

Question 223
What protection does a NEW distributor have regarding the purchase of a previous distributors accounts? Are there any legal options that will guarantee the new distributor that the previous distributor didn't just unload his inventory to get-out selling to unqualified customers who can't afford?

Answers 223

  1. Back when I was a brand new Matco distributor, I purchased $13,000 street money from the existing - soon to be previous distributors route while my district manager buried his head. Of this $13,000, $4000.00 were all BAD ACCOUNTS! The guy leaving had unloaded his inventory and issued excessive credit to some guys who couldn't afford to pay so I began my business chasing my money right off the bat. My trust was violated from the get go (I was hoodwinked)! I was told that I must take control of my business by my district manager and the corporation made it clear to me that this money is ALL my responsibility (even though I didn't sell any of it). With that said, I learned the hard way about this type of franchised business. There is NO protection - NONE regarding your money on the street! This scenario reflects the ethical corporate culture you are dealing with when doing the mobile tool franchise gig. I just happened to trust the wrong people but I know there are honest business people out there too. Watch out! It just plain sucks that some of the people you trust burn you! The vultures are everywhere.
  2. There is no guaranteed protection. It is all up to you. You must decide what account to take and what not to take. Sort of a crap shoot!!!
  3. With Matco you can buy all, part or none of the previous distributor's accounts. You have min. 30 business days. You decide and if someone is telling you different they are wrong. The previous distributor's good accounts would be to your advantage to purchase. It has to be good for everyone, not just the exiting distributor. Only buy GOOD accounts if you want.
  4. Why isn't this explained in the UFOC by the MATCO corporation? I also was told by my district manager that I had 30 days MAXIMUM to purchase these previous accounts and must do it right away. Instead of a crap shoot, it was bull crap. In addition, this corporation has a line of credit program called Gold Card that allows a dealer to issue big credit to customers as a "co-signer" for them. If a customer can't get credit ANY WHERE, the dealer basically co-signs a note for the customer. This allows a previous distributor doing this to take away future sales money from a persons territory and the corporation expects the new distributor to collect this for the old dealer providing no accounting way to track it. This business is to wishy washy and only geared towards protecting the corporation. I figure anyone doing this type of Gold Card co-signing has to be very desperate for a sale and will do almost anything for the almighty buck. Obviously this type of person has NOTHING to loose anymore and is just plain either a fool or in debt so far that it don't matter anymore to his future. It isn't even reasonable anyway you look at it. Anybody out there doing this Gold Card way of business with MATCO?
  5. Who determines that this is "good" for everyone and how does a person know which accounts are GOOD accounts in only 30 days (3-4 visits)? Kind of sounds like a potential sticky mess in the making.
  6. .
  7. #5 you, the purchaser decide what is GOOD. If you let them push you into it, you don't belong in the Tool Business! Min, 30 business days...that 5 weeks. If you want more audit time than take it. If it is Good it is Good...If it is Bad than it is Bad. Don't let anyone push BAD DEBT on YOU!
  8. Who determines what is "good" for everyone is one of them "GRAY" areas in this franchise tool business - at least with MATCO. The TERM "gray area" is used often when they INTENTIONALLY want to avoid a straight answer. Another answer that is REALLY, OVER abused this company uses MANY, MANY times to side-step important life-changing questions from the first day of training at school to truck trainers & district managers is the phrase "DON'T SWEAT THE SMALL STUFF!!". When you hear this phrase, what they really mean is "I am leaving you to crash and burn on your own" -after we drain you financially. Been there & done that so I know! How many other current & past matco distributors have heard "DON'T SWEAT THE SMALL STUFF" when you needed a straight answer? GRAY AREA!?? -Get real! A persons financial future don't mean nothing to these people. AFTER you sign-up in their program you are only $$ signs to them.
  9. Absolutely none! Check out the accounts carefully before buying them. Think of it like cosigning for some else's loan would you consign for somebody you just met???

  1. SK Tools gave a brief description of their company first. Then, went over their 2008 product catalog and introduced new products. The best thing about this meeting was the exchange of suggestions and ideas of the attendees. I think SK were shocked about what really goes on in the "real" world. I am considering starting a MAC tools distributorship. Right now I turn wrenches for a living. I am wondering if anyone else has made this transition? If so are you happy with your decision. Financially how well have you done (average weekly sales starting out/average weekly take home)?

Answers 215

  1. Would you quit a job making $25/hour as a tech to sell tools? (thinking about MAC)
  2. Would you quit a job that makes $25/hr for a job that nobody can tell you how much money you going to make? Would you invest $70,000 of your money or borrowed money in a business which you never did before? If you can't answer positively to both questions, you should not do it. I have being in the tool business over 20+ years and seen only one in ten ever make it. Most guys don't last two years.
  3. .
  4. Check with Cornwell they are the best to go with. Their products are made better, the price is less, which is a big plus right now. Not as many people in management in your face, very stable company compared to Mac. You don't have to submit profit and loss statements to the company like Matco and Snap-on. Cornwell has a larger territory then all of the others. I went with Cornwell 6 months ago after checking all of the others including going as an independent. Cornwell is the way to go!
  5. BEFORE YOU SIGN WITH MAC TOOLS YOU OWE IT TO YOURSELF TO CHECK OUT CORNWELL, MATCO AND SNAP-ON. I DID THE SAME AND WENT WITH CORNWELL. CORNWELL WAS UNFAMILIER TO MY CUSTOMERS. AFTER 5 YEARS IM IN THE TOP 20 OF THE COMPANY. HOWEVER BE READY TO SACRIFICE YOUR TIME.
  6. Email me and I will be happy to visit with you about the pros and cons. tooldude10@hotmail.com
  7. Independent is the way to go!  Check with ISN regarding their Freedom Program for Independent mobile dealers. Ask for Paul Hallstrom or Terry Perkins, 800-966-8478.
  8. .
  9. Talk to other distributors, ask about their district manager, and dig for the truth. A good one is a joy, a bad one can make your life a nightmare. Also ask the techs who they like and dislike, and get out of your shop to do it. You'll see a pattern in your area. All district managers and tool men and tool companies are not equal! And there is no single way or company that is the best!
  10. STAY OUT OF THE CRAZY TOOL BUSINESS, ASK YOUR ACCOUNT WHAT HE THINKS ABOUT A BUSINESS LIKE THAT. I`M SURE IT WON`T BE FAVORABLE. TRY GETTING LOANS FROM A BANK FOR BUSINESS WITH TERMS THE TOOL DEALER HAS TO GIVE, BETTER HAVE REALLY GOOD CREDIT AND ENOUGH ASSETS. GOING AS AN INDEPENDENT WOULD BE EVEN WORST FOR SOMEONE JUST STARTING OUT. NOBODY WILL KNOW YOU, AND WONT TRUST YOU TO BUY TOOLS. YOU WILL BECOME THE BARGAN MAN AND THEN EVENTUALLY GO OUT OF BUSINESS AFTER LOSING ALL OF YOUR MONEY.
  11. YOU MUST BE CRAZY TO GO WITH MAC FOOLS
  12. Consider seeing a shrink!
  13. Don't do it!!!!!!
  14. Do not do it, this is the wrong time to start. You will be risking good credit for an almost guaranteed failure. I know I did it.
  15. DONT Join MAC. Former great mac dist 8yrs
  16. been in business for ten yrs, seen 14 trks com and go. never lasting more than 2 yrs. Do Not attempt unless you have 70-80k CASH. sorry, prime time for tool trks has passed.

Question 214
How many business people out there have been financially ruined and fighting legal problems because of the Franchised Mobile Tool Business?

Answers 214

  1. Why do you ask?
  2. How would you ever find out how many their are? More importantly, why would you want to know? Most people have some pride and I don't think their willing to admit they lost everything to one of these companies, they don't want it shoved in their faces and told their a failure again. Most of these people are honest, hard working families that were just taking their one chance in life. Now they are ruined forever and the three families I know of just want to be left alone, their trying to move on with their lives as best they can. It amazes me what these franchise companies leave behind in their destruction, families broken, divorced parents, little kids that end up not seeing their fathers anymore.....but rest assured these corporate buffoons all sleep well at night, they just hide behind the old adage "they just weren't cut out to be tool salesman" as they count their piles of money....
  3. The issue isn't why a person wants to know! It is only to prevent others from falling into the Franchised "goon squad" horror just for chasing the American dream. These corporate goons are the only ones smiling at events if you look closely. The hard working honest folks who make them rich are usually all stressed out and full of anxiety to enjoy anything (including family) because to survive in this business you must eat, drink, and sleep their franchise plan because of what they persuaded you into signing. It scares the heck out of me! Maybe state attorney generals should do their job and research this unethical practice hid by franchise laws.
  4. Matco is bad news, I've lost my house, my business, my credit rating and after all that now I'm going through a divorce so I've lost my wife and two young kids. I had a job making $60,000 a year before I went into the tool business, all I wanted was a chance to have my own business and be able to spend more time with my family. Over the next three years I went through more DM's than I can even remember, finally they didn't bother filling the DM position anymore and I went the last year without one at all. Most of those DM's went to Snap-On and Mac eventually, telling me that they were jumping off the sinking ship. Big turnover in my district among dealers too, when I went under I was one of the old timers! The only response I got from Matco through the whole thing was "well, it's your business and maybe your not cut out for it". yet they were the ones that caused most of the problem, selling me a short route right from day one. I didn't take a vacation in those four years, I couldn't afford to go myself, just sent the wife and kids by themselves because of the circumstances. I put about 60-70 hours a week into the business, I suspect most weeks it was a lot more if I actually sat down and figured it out. I collected all my own money up off the street after it was over, that took me about 8 weeks, but my head count was just never enough. I just started a new job one of my former customers offered me, been at it for a month now and I work about 45 hours a week. The steady paycheck is a real blessing and every Friday I know it's going to be there. Take my word for it, I've lived it, Matco is the worst franchise to get into!
  5. How did you come out on selling your tool truck and did you get any assistance from whom you leased it through because they usually are very happy to set you up when you order it. How was your experience dealing with this expense of your business?
  6. What state are you in?
  7. I broke even on my truck actually, that may have been the only good thing that came out of shutting down my business. I don't want to tell anyone who I am or where I'm from, I'm afraid a lot of corporate people from matco frequent this board as some sort of recreation and I really can't handle anymore humiliation in my life anymore. It isn't worth fighting at all, my attorney basically told me that Matco is protected by the franchise agreement I signed, that I would never see a court room anyway. So theirs little point in wasting my time pursuing legal action against them. I lost and they won and that's reality, now I have to adjust to that the best I can. I am getting back on my feet again finally, the jobs going well and I really enjoy these paychecks. Imagine my humiliation when my Dad and Mom who are retired bought me a camper to live in for the past few months. At least it beats livng out of my pick up truck. The guy that owns the company that I work for now has offered me an apartment over top of the garage, that is great because it has three bedrooms and I can have my kids over for weekends finally, so things are slowly working out for me again.
  8. "Thank you" for sharing this nightmare tragedy, it took a lot of balls to do this! I agree-obviously the corporate people are watching this posting closely and would love to shut it down because they don't want the truth exposed. Don't be afraid of these people any longer my friend. Keep hanging your head high, be proud, and move on. God will deal with them in HIS time.
  9. THIS QUESTION SHOULD BE ANSWERED BY PERSONNEL WHO WERE TRAINED TO SELL, NOT JUST BY PEOPLE THINKING THEY COULD DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT., SELLING TOOLS, LIKE SELLING ANYTHING ELSE REQUIRES PEOPLE SKILLS AND THE ABILITY TO KNOW HOW TO WORK WITH TOOLS.
  10. .
  11. "THIS QUESTION SHOULD BE ANSWERED BY PERSONNEL WHO WERE TRAINED TO SELL, NOT JUST BY PEOPLE THINKING THEY COULD DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT., SELLING TOOLS, LIKE SELLING ANYTHING ELSE REQUIRES PEOPLE SKILLS AND THE ABILITY TO KNOW HOW TO WORK WITH TOOLS." In other words, you don't want to hear the truth about the real world, that's fine, but in the future please move on to another post that's more blue sky for you. Most of us are living a nightmare trying to get our lives back together, this topic is meant to help others that may be going through the same thing, not for you to blast! How do you know that these people don't have sales training? That's right, you don't, so if you don't like what your reading, do us all a favor and move along.
  12. It appears the question has indeed been answered by personnel who are trained to sell. These mobile tool franchise companies mandate that you PAY for, attend schooling, & graduate at your own cost. Signing on with these franchise companies does NOT allow you to do something different even if you wanted to because they basically OWN your life from that point on. It is all-for-one & none-for-all after signing on. You are not even close to being in charge of your destiny. Go independent and stay away from these franchises.
  13. I've figured the truth out! Isn't this a classic "Mobile Tool franchise CHURN or CHURNING"? Obviously this must be legal in the U.S.A.! If not legal, why aren't these people held to account for the families they destroy? Definition of CHURN: This is where a franchiser sells a territory that cannot turn a profit then sits back and waits for the business to fold. The franchiser reclaims the territory and resells it to another franchisee who inevitably fails a year or two down the track. Most franchisees never air their complaints because by the time they realize what's happening the bank has called in their debt and they've lost the family home. This goes ON & ON under the radar of the public. Litigation is too expensive and time consuming. Predatory franchisers like this will beat the franchisee every single time because they have the deepest pockets and a legal contract to hold them to. "Watch out man"!!
  14. The honest fact is every year there are more than one thousand mobile tool distributors "churned" out of these so-called mobile tool franchise business's. Each one of these hard working human beings represents a financial loss that for many dealers is devastating. Many families crumble under the stress. Most HORRIBLY affected have been mobile tool dealers and their FAMILIES, who were so overwhelmed, they took their own life or the life of another. This is the REALITY of this type of business. This is real serious stuff!! Don't listen to any of these franchise recruiters (district managers) Giving "pie in the sky projections" and LOW ball expense projections with unlimited potential B.S. of your new business with 350 "potential customers". In the END (after you and your family are completely broke) these companies will only tell you that "you just are not cut-out for this business"! "Please read YOUR agreement YOU SIGNED"!!!

Question 208
I'm on a quest to find out if I've got what it takes to obtain and prosper with a Matco franchise. One basic question arises........what are the pros and cons of leasing a truck? I realize a lot of factors should be taken into consideration (size of territory, population of territory, terrain, etc. etc.), but if you could, how 'bout your quick, general answer to the question? I appreciate it, a lot!!

Answers 208

  1. RUN FROM THESE PEOPLE!!!
  2. Leasing the truck is the usually the best idea for new dealer. That way your money can to used to increase your inventory and working capital. Tax-wise is a good idea. Getting a new truck usually means you don't have to worry about your truck breaking down on you. Believe me, when you just begin, there will be a million things to learn. So unless you're a mechanic, a new or good running truck is a must. The size and type might be determine by your particular route.
  3. Check on the dealer turnover in your particular area. If the turnover is less than five years, the route is probably difficult to succeed in. Usually takes four or five years to pay off you truck then make the kind of money you want.
  4. MATCO DOES GOOD IN A MAJOR MRKT. STRUGGLES IN RURAL RT. HAVENT HAD ONE LAST IN 5 YEARS, AVG. TERM 6 MON.
  5. get a 22ft. truck with a walk through and yes lease the truck. if you get a 18ft. you will go Hungry!! read every thing before you sign. I've been with MATCO for three years I'm doing great!!
  6. Leasing your tool truck is a good idea when you just starting off. With limit capital, it is good business decision. But I don't agree with the idea of buying the biggest truck possible. A big tool truck is like a big tool box. They both don't make you money! The tools that you put in them, make you more money. In your case, more inventory will make you more money than a "big" truck. A "big truck" only impresses mechanics in the beginning (1-2 months). Long term the mechanics will want tools not an empty truck. Business is business not a "size" contest.
  7. With the price of fuel, if you get a 22ft truck you will not only go hungry but also broke. Read everything ten times including all the posts here on this site. Hire an accountant and ask your banker to review this type of business. Just don't ask a car mechanic about heart surgery! Nobody with integrity should be candy coating this venture - watch out who is telling you the numbers especially the REAL expenses of this type of business.
  8. I just searched for some used Matco trucks and found at least 46 on only two web sites for sale. It appears these 46 hard working folks didn't prosper at all. Most of these trucks are 2004 thru 2006! That is a good indicator of how long they were in this business before going upside down and broke.

Answers 206

  1. The gateway program is a slightly altered update to the orig. trial program. in my opinion it is a better program for the trial franchisee.
  2. No, it is difficult to make money under a trial franchise as the profits go the franchiser for inventory payments and your truck payments.
  3. Don't do it!!!! Go full boat or not at all!

Question 204
I need some info from indys. I was a snap on dealer for 12 years and been out about 6. Thinking about going indy. Any advise on not having the name brand socket and wrenches, im thinking sk on my truck or is it all about service and just being the every week to get the trust.

Answers 204

  1. SK Tool is very good tool line. I've been selling SK for over 10 yrs. The quality and durability is same as Snap On. The advantage is lower cost. Customer service is important but "junk is junk". There is "junk" tools out there for customers who the "cheapest" tool. So you have to decide who are marketing to-the low road or the high road. It's your decision.
  2. If you were Snap On for 12 years, I think you answered your own question!
  3. I, too, was a Snap On dealer before going independent. Yes, SK hard-line tools are just as good as Snap On (breakage, quality, etc). The advantage is price. I believe if you have quality product and follow it up with good customer service, you do just fine. Your profit margin will greatly improved-what more can you ask for?
  4. Contact ISN regarding their Freedom Program for Independent Tool Dealers, 800-966-8478 ext 1256.
  5. Check out www.imtda.com and register. Their forum offers a lot of help for rookies.
  6. For help in making the "move" check out http://techshop-ets.blogspot.com. and www.imtda.com. Once registered you can ask all the questions and get your answers from the group.
  7. SK used to be a good tool line. Unfortunately SK has been selling to even Harbor Freight. This caused the value of SK tools to drop and a lot of dealers are dropping the line. Many tool companies have made this same mistake.

Question 201
Any comments about MEDCO recently buying out Triple A Tool in LA? The "BIG" super warehouses seem to growing larger and larger. What about the"little guy"us jobbers????

Answers 201

  1. If it's true, I think it can make us, the "little guys" only stronger
  2. Anything that limits your options of where to buy is not a good thing. Triple A was a good place especially if you are in the LA area. I've bought from Medco and it's like dealing with WalMart...they don't have that personal touch, just another big company who's motto should be it's "Our way or the highway". I'm going to miss Triple A.
  3. Just curious but how does it make us, the "little guys" stronger? Usually less competition has the opposite effect? I quit dealing with Medco years ago, now I have to start up again or find someone else. competition has the opposite effect?
  4. Medco purchased Triple A but Steve Rall the former owner runs the place. If anything they benefit from having more competitive prices. You can still walk through with a cart and pick the tools you want from their inventory. If anything Medco is focusing more attention on the mobile tool market.

Question 198
Are there any Mac Tools dealers who have converted to independent and how has the business turned out not being a major brand?

Answers 198

  1. I converted over two years ago. It has been a great move for me. Are you a Mac Dealer now? If so, give us more info as to why you are looking to convert. We will help in any way we can. Also you can go to imtd@yahoo groups. com to get more info.
  2. I was with both Snap On and Matco before going independent. I still have my "old" customers buying from me. I found out that people buy mainly because the dealer himself. The brand of tools is usually secondary. Your customer, knowledge, attitude, personality, etc is what really counts. Sure some customers buy by "brand name" but not as many as you might think. Otherwise, I wouldn't be as successful as I am. Independent is the way to go!!!
  3. I'm approved to become a MAC Tool Distributor wanted to hear from some current distributors.

Question 197
Very close to signing a deal with Matco here in FL. Route was started 7 months ago. Territory is very large and has 25,000 on the street. My break even number is 5,800 a month. Is this number high ? How do you rank Matco compared to Cornwell ? Both companies want me.

Answers 197

  1. They want your checkbook, not you, sorry but that's the real reality of all these tool companies. Anyone can sell Matco tools, it just might not have the name on the side of it. Buy KD, Lisle, Armstrong, OTC.....direct and save yourself a big headache. Its the exact same stuff matco sells, just without the name on the side of it, or the price for that matter.
  2. Stay away from Cornwell very controlling and behind the times. Matco seems more up to date. $5800 can be done in a week not a month if your not afraid of work. Any tool company will take you as long as you have the Doe. Mac is worth a look at they have changed back to traditional Dist. I have been with Cornwell, Mac, Matco, and Ind.  I'm now retired and just offering some advice. 30 years tool truck sales.
  3. What are you paying for the A/R on the street? What happened to the last dealer? Matco, Cornwell it really doesn't make a difference, its what YOU want
  4. It depends how much you want to make $$$. If your figures are accurate-breakeven is $1348/wk. So if you want to gross$50,000/yr you would need $1000/wk or average about $2348.00 weekly sales. Ask both companies what average weekly sales average was of the previous dealer. If there is a big difference-better think hard on decision.
  5. please gime price on matco md1000 proscanplus
  6. MD1000 distributor charged price from Matco is $797.16 and retails off truck for $1138,80.
  7. Dude...I agree they want your $$$. Question is, do you want to bust your butt to make a go of it? The big factor is YOU, not the tools, not the truck, not the fact they want you. You can do it but be prepared to work, and I mean WORK hard until you get established (12 - 36 months) and even then you

Answers 194

  1. Are you parking on grass? Some cities have rules against that.
  2. I had a similar problem. I found a warehouse area in a commercial area and am renting a space. Actually it worked out better as it in the center of my route. Also, I don't have to fight traffic in that "big truck"
every day going to and fro home. You save a the extra wear and tear by taking the truck home, too. Look for service stations with extra space, maybe one of your customers who would trade space for tools, etc.

Question 191
How are you "indy" distributors doing about warranty on items that were covered by the franchise companies but are not purchasing from the outside. Ex.'s screwdrive bits, magnets, ect.....

Answers 191

  1. Please, restate this question. I'm not sure I understand what you are asking!
  2. Most independent dealers I know give equal or better warranty than franchise guys. Reason being indys personally decide the warranty. Rather than franchise dealers who must sent the warranty in question to distribution center to decide whether it will accept the warranty claim or not. Ask mechanics you know a lot are very unhappy with the warranty service from the "majors".
  3. What I meant on the question is there are a lot of items that the "majors" offer a lifetime warranty on like 1/2"x3/8" adpts (impact) and screwdriver bits, pocket magnets ect. I see written on the catalogs in Sunex and Grey and SK that they don't offer a lifetime warranty on those type of items. In that case what do you do. I also see that the pricing from the majors have the warranty built in those items. I am just lo
